Interview Done By Mike Wilkerson

MW: Please introduce yourself?

BM: My name is Brandon Mills and I play guitar in the band Decyfer Down.

MW: Tell me about your first time on stage?

BM: It’s a little bit of a blur, but it was more of a floor than a stage lol. My aunt owned this little hippy store front called “yesterdaze closet” and people would just hang there on Friday and Saturday nights. She would have guest musicians and an open mic thing.  So me and some buddies would jam! We were not very good lol.

MW: How did Decyfer Down come about?

BM: Well we actually started out as Decyfer back in 2001-ish. We started getting some label interest and eventually signed a deal with SRE/Columbia records in 2005. Are friends and label mates were the band Disciple, so marketing-wise it was a little challenging to have Decyfer/Disciple on the same label so we added the “Down” to it to help separate our names and the rest is history. Decyfer Down was born.

MW: Decyfer Down has been around over 15 years how have you kept it going?

BM: Hmm, that’s an interesting question. I think the love and drive of creating music and the countless emails from people all over the country of how a song we wrote has impacted their life. It’s pretty humbling. We are just a bunch of goobers from North Carolina, so for us to have this opportunity and to tour and to connect with people has been amazing! There has definitely been some ups and downs, but at the end of the day, it’s a privilege to do what we do.

MW: Was there ever a time you wanted to just give up?

BM: Absolutely lol – endless touring and writing a ton of songs that will never see the light of day and being away from our families definitely wore us down. We were relentless.  And of course, there is always the financial problems as well. Making money and supporting a family with rock music is no easy task. We actually have just come off of a pretty long break so we are feeling recharged and ready to go!

MW: Tell me about the new release “The Other Side Of Darkness”?

BM: Yeah, so we are super excited about this record!! This is our first independent record since parting ways with Fair Trade back in 2014. The Record touches on a lot of subjects, but it all kinda points back to us being flawed as people and struggling to fight sin and other issues in our lives. The title track is just stating that yes, there are valleys and darkness and pain in our lives, but through all that God has a plan for us. He has not left us and he is the light shining through the other side of darkness. We hope that this record will encourage people to fight through those things and to look to Jesus.

MW: What will be the first single and video?

BM: The first single is a song called “Nothing More” and we’ve haven’t decided on a video yet.  We may just do a lyric video. But the song deals with things in our lives that keep us down and poison our spirits. Whether it’s a bad relationship or an addiction– whatever toxin or thing that is trying to destroy you — break away from that.  Draw a line in the sand and have nothing more to do with it.

MW: Will “The Other Side Of Darkness” be on vinyl?

BM: Yes, it will. Not sure when it will be available. From what I understand, the turn around on vinyl is pretty slow.

MW: What can we expect from Decyfer Down for the rest of 2016?

BM: Well, currently we are out on The City RockFest Tour with Disciple, Seventh Day Slumber, Spoken and Children 18:3, which runs till the end of April. We are also excited about the record dropping April 1st and no, that’s not an April fool’s joke lol. Then summer festivals and most likely a fall tour.

MW: How do fans reach out to you and Decyfer Down to say hi or purchase something?

BM: They can always find us on Facebook and our website of course. All of our music is available on iTunes for purchase, and some retailers will carry the record. Also we have where people can email us.

MW: What would you like to say in closing?

BM: I think I can speak for everyone in the band and say we are so thankful and blown away with the love and support that we’ve been shown through emails and our indie gogo campaign and people coming to shows. We are super excited for our new record to come out and the next chapter in Decyfer Down. We couldn’t do it without you!
