Stoner Rock Band Of The Day – Interview With Christian & Chris From Mother Engine

Posted: 07/28/2015 in Music, Stoner Rock Band Of The Day

Interview Done By Mike Wilkerson

MW: Please introduce yourself?
CD: Hi! My name is Christian, I play the bass for Mother Engine.
CT: Hi! I’m Chris and I play guitar…
MW: Tell me about the first time playing live with any band?
CD: I had my first band when I was 16 years old. Our first gig was a support show for a local well-known cover rock act. So we had to play in front of about 1000 people. I guess not few of them knew better how to play the bass…
CT: I started playing music together with our drummer Corny… We’ve met in school and wanted to rock out… Our first concert was in the same year that we started playing.. You can imagine how bad it was… but grandma liked it, so we called our first band Grandmas Darling…
MW: How did the name Mother Engine come about?
CD: There’s no special story behind this name. We created it nearly 8 years ago and we were playing a different style then. We were just looking for a name that expresses a lot of raw power fitting the ‘high-energy-rocknroll’ we played in these days ;D Anyway, until today we saw no reason to change it!
CT: I remember that we’ve listened to a lot of Motorhead and the first album of Wolfmother at that time… I guess – like Chrisitan said it – we just wanted to be the baddest motherfuckers (with arms and legs like strawes), so we thought we should be known as the mother of motors…
MW: Where is Mother Engine from?
CD: We are from Plauen/Saxony/Germany which is located in the very East near to the Czech Republic.
CT: Small province, with a beautiful landscape…
MW: Who are your influences?
CD: We all have a lot of influences since we listen to a lot of different styles of music. I guess the experience with bands like Kyuss and Colour Haze and even some local stoner bands were the initial for us to play the psychedelic/stoner rock music…
CT: That’s right… I guess our biggest respect for jamming and live music invention goes out to Led Zeppelin… We often trait them as a kind of religion… But over the years we started listening to a lot of different music… western German Kraut from the 60s/70s, Post, Psychedelic, atmospheric music, electronic music, old and also very new stuff… We have often very much in common with our taste of music, but it also happens that we joke about ur bandmates other tastes..
MW: What was Mother Engine first live show?
CD: I actually can’t remember our first live show, but I do remember the first show without our former singer Clemens. When he quit we had already some gigs confirmed and we had 2 weeks to create a nearly instrumental set. We had a lot of ideas and motivation and it felt very good to go this way. Nobody knew if it could work live but we already played songs like ‘Weltraumwolf’ at this gig and it worked out very well!
MW: Tell me about the following releases:
CD: Muttermaschine is our first record and we realesed it in December 2012. At this point we did not get much attention for this record but after half a year this fact should fortunately change. We recorded it live at TAM studios in Reinsdorf with our friend Alexander Tscholakov. It was our first real studio experience and we were surprised when we were done with the recordings after 2 days 😀 In August there will be a reissue of ‘Muttermaschine’ on vinyl released by Fuzzmatazz Records.
We released ‘Absturz’ at this years’s Desertfest in Berlin. It was also live recorded at TAM studios in not more than 3 days, even if the writing took us 2 years. The CD and digital version is published by our own little record label ‘Gebrueder Schall’ while the vinyl version will be released on ‘Napalm Records’ in August 2015. We really like this album and we are very happy about the fantastic ‘real-3D-model-photographed’ artwork made by our friend and fourth band member Katrin Lehmann (Eusepia Lehe)… She’s actually doing all of our artworks..
MW: What shows does Mother Engine having coming up for the rest of 2015?
CD: In August we will start our summer tour through Germany/Switzerland/France/Spain and Portugal and in October we will come back to the Netherlands. There are also some festival shows in Germany left for this summer like ‘E-lite culture Festival’ and ‘Rockt den See’. We hope that you will see us on any stage nearly every weekend after the summer.
MW: How can Mother Engine fans reach out to you to say Hi or purchase something?
CD: Please send us an e-mail to, visit us on facebook at or at our bandcamp site Right now you can pre-order Absturz on Vinyl at the Napalm Records online store.
MW: What would you like to say in closing?
CD: We want to thank all you guys out there for supporting us the last 3 years. It feels very good to be part of this beautiful ‘scene’ and we hope to produce some more Mother Engine albums in the future!
CT: Yes, same with me… Thank you all very much…your warmth, your enthusiasm, hope and energy you put into us as a band and into the scene in general is just overwhelming…
