Interview Done By Mike Wilkerson
MW: Please introduce yourself?
M: Hi, we’re Mahogany: Andrew Prinz & Jaclyn Slimm. We both sing and play a variety of instruments, including 12-string guitars, cello, piano, percussion, synths, sequencers & drum machines. The sound of the group is always developing. People tell us Mahogany is akin to the Factory/4AD aesthetic, shoegaze, psych, krautrock, and other identifiers, but we don’t ascribe to genre (though these are obviously touchpoints).
MW: How did you get the chance to play SXSW 2013?
M: By invitation. We are very much honored to play. There continues to be a burgeoning interest in Mahogany both live and in recordings. We’ve even seen the first Mahogany album ‘The Dream of a Modern Day’ in a “Shoegaze Top Ten” in the December issue of MOJO, next to Ulrich Schnauss, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, and Lush — and there is more to come.
MW: Have you ever played SXSW before?
M: Yes, we played last year and also played in 2002. It is interesting to chart how the festival has developed!
MW: Where is Mahogany from?
M: The band originated in Michigan, but moved to New York in 1999. Currently we’re in Chicago, where our label, BLVD Records, is based.
MW: What is the music scene like in Chicago, IL?
M: Strong. There are many musicians here, and many working bands. We continue to meet great people.
MW: Do you have a new release coming out?
M: Yes, a long-forthcoming EP called ‘Electric Prisms,’ which features songs from our upcoming 3rd album ‘Frontiering.’ We premiered “Keystone Sonata” from the EP, through the SXSW YouTube channel. It is no secret that there is usually some time between records, though we frequently play live.
MW: Do you plan to tour on your way to SXSW?
M: Yes, and afterwards as well! Check our website, www.mahogany.nu, for updates.
MW: What are you hoping for coming out of SXSW?
M: We hope to play to many people, celebrate, and be with friends!
MW: What would you like to say in closing?
M: We’d like to thank the SXSW Festival, our label, our families, and all of our amazing friends. And thank you!
