Interview With EYEHATEGOD Lead Singer Mike IX Williams

Interview done by Michael Wilkerson

MW: Please introduce yourself?

Mike IX: I’m Mike IX Williams from New Orleans, Louisiana by way of the Gawd’s country – High Point, NC, and also pit stopping along the way in New York, San Francisco, L.A, Texas, & Notongham, UK… Good to meet ya’ll kind folks…

MW: Coming from NOLA is there a lot of pressure to stay true to that sound?

Mike IX: No man, never. We have never been influenced by what we are SUPPOSED to sound like, only what we felt we should sound like. We sound the way we do ‘cos we never cared what Punk/Metal band peers around us are/were trained to sound like. We evolved this way naturally from what we were raised on. It is sad when bands play to the consumer and dont follow they heart. I do have a bunch of different bands I play in; all different sounding & ranging from this sound to that sound, no conformity… All still in the extreme genre of rock and roll….

MW: I missed EYEHATEGOD play at SXSW in Austin, TX this year. How was the show? Was that your first time playing?

Mike IX: Nope it definitely wasn’t our 1st time playing SXSW. EHG has played there many times through the years. I hate playing that fest, but last time was really killer, played outside with Penatgram + a bunch of other younger nifty groups. Why did you miss it..?? Lazy? Didn’t care? What was it…?

MW: To tell you the truth I drink Texas tap water and was sick for 3 days. I even had to go to the hospital while I was in Texas.

MW: Tell me about the following releases:

In the Name of Suffering – EYEHATEGOD’s O.G. release, the true first basic EHG sounds beside the demos/live. Fucked production we couldn’t have planned if we wanted to. It came out in 1989 on an indie label, not 1992 like all the internet rumors say, on a shitty metal rip-off label and it was a re-release on CMR.

Take as Needed for Pain – Great record. EHG, we found our sound, the way we wanna be. I was homeless at this point but that inspires the record more.

Dopesick – I’m living in Brooklyn, NY. Greyhound buses are my main formal mode of travel. A shitty ‘Hey Bra’ studio’ but the saving grace is Billy Anderson, we are still friends to this day. Buncha faster drugs – Mixed in S.F.  I like this LP, fucking songs are great, but maybe a bit rushed in post production.

Confederacy of Ruined Lives – Great album/great songs, Big time engineer. Sounds heavy and HUGE to me. I wish we did more of these tunes live nowadays & always.

MW: What is the title of the new EYEHATEGOD release you all are working on now? Can you tell me anything about it?

Mike IX: No title as of yet. We have NOT been in the studio honestly. I’m sick of people asking me and saying to me that “Oh yeah, its coming out this year right..” I am not gonna lead folks down that path. Here’s the bottom line; the songs are written – enough for a full length record but, we do NOT have a label and we have NOT recorded nary an official song, except live…

MW: What are the plans for EYEHATEGOD touring the rest of 2011 into 2012?

Mike IX:  EYEHATEGOD Tour Dates 2011/2012 –
10/28/2011 Siberia – New Orleans, LA
11/04/2011 Rail Club – Ft. Worth, TX
11/05/2011 TBA

01/21/2012 Sonar – Baltimore, MD w/ Integrity 9 (A389 Anniversary Show)

MW: What would you like to say in closing?

Mike IX: Listen to School Jerks and Negative Lifestyle for me and go to our websites & BUY MY BOOK + EHG Merch/ Records!!  Love you pussy thugs…Support the IX…
